In this case, we're learning a lick from the late-great, Steel Guitar Hall of Famer Speedy West and his live Lawrence Welk Show rendition of On The Alamo.

As you'll see in the video, this little recording device makes all the difference when trying to learn a fast lick--or get some tricky timing down.

One of my favorite Speedy West performances is the aforementioned On the Alamo, and there's this one part that always stood out to me: that "backscrape" arpeggio that Speedy does toward the middle of the video.

I recently picked up a Tascam GT-R1 Digital Recorder to help tape my students lessons with me. (Quick note: After a lesson, I post the audio online for them in their own private, password protected page on Steel-Guitar-Mojo.com

But the GT-R1 actually is a guitar trainer as well as a recorder, which means it can slow down and loop any segment of mp3 or WAV file that happens to find it's way into the device.
